I mentioned back in this post that we had Annie Reynolds and her crew from the Why Worry Ranch here to work out their horses. Josh and our daughter were able to be out with them, soaking up the vast horse knowledge they have.
Training high quality horses takes an immense amount of time, effort and hard work. There is a reason why these types of horses cost more- you put an insane amount of time, work and emotional energy into these horses. But it’s all worth it because the end product is an incredibly athletic horse that can work cattle and do what you want it to do. And, they are beautiful and magnificent when they are working a cow.
Training high quality horses is literally a full time job. You spend all day on the back of a horse. But it’s all worth it and if you love that kind of stuff, then it’s not hard waking up in the morning.
Josh and our daughter used the mechanical “cow” that they had. You train the horses first on the flag then transition them to a real cow. After all, you can’t run before you learn how to walk.
Before you put in a full day of working out the horses on cattle or on the flag, a lot of time is spent warming them up.
Josh was able to work cows too. Most of his cattle work is on video so he could study it afterwards but here are some pictures (course you don’t see the cow because my camera had the longer lens on and he came too close. hah!)
(Josh always seemed to loose his hat when working a cow. hah!)
