A view of our barn from the deck of our house. You can barely see the barn roof in this picture but the sunlight coming through the trees was awesome!
Not everyone has a place where they can keep their horse. Maybe you are one of the lucky ones where you are able to keep your horse at your own place. If you don't have a place, you want to find a place where both you are your horse are happy. Here is what you should look for when boarding your horse:
1. Ask about the size, cleaning schedule and air quality of the stalls. How big are the stalls? How often are they cleaned? Are shavings included in the price of the stall? Do the horses in the barn get turned out? If I don't want my horse in the barn, what other options are there?
2. Ask about feed. How often feed is provided and what they provide for feed for your horse. Is it included in the boarding cost? Are grain and supplements included or are they additional?
3. What is the facility's water system? Do they have access to fresh water at all times?
4. What are the facilities arrangements for routine veterinary care and farrier service?
5. What ammenities do I have access to use if I board my horse here? Are there riding trails, arenas – places where my horse and I can ride? Do they provide any events that my horse and I can participate in?
6. What is my overall feeling I get when I'm there and associate with the owners? Do I feel at home? Do I feel comfortable?
For a successful boarding experience make sure you are asking these questions and more to make sure you are finding the perfect match for you and your horse.
